This photograph shows contrast through the great difference in the colours of the bright green and the brown. Although there is only one green thing and the rest brown, a strong sense of contrast is created through the difference in the brightness and dullness.

Contrast is shown in this photo through the difference in age, gender and it could be argued colour. The most obvious is the age as one person is old whilst the other still quite young. There is difference in gender as one is male and the other female, it could be argued that there is in fact contrast in the colours as the man has white hair whilst the youth has dark.

One glass empty whilst the other full. Although it is a simple concept, the contrast is obvious as one glass is full whilst the other is the inverse, being empty.

Black and white is the most simple yet effective contrast. This photo conveys contrast through the black kitten and the white kitten.

My definition-

Contrast is where two things are completely different, two things are opposite to each other.

This portrait is of an elderly man and the emotion conveyed from his facial expression is content but in addition, the clearness of the eyes suggests that he is young at heart.

This young child shows youth through the big blue eyes and the clear and smooth skin. Because of these features a sense of innocence is created and conveyed.

This is a different angle of a portrait because it is the back of ones head and the only feature shown are the hair and the head shape. The back of head shows texture and form through the difference in light.

Although this photograph is rather dark, the key features are emphasised and as is form. The main feature you are drawn to is the eyes as they are both dark and light at the same time.

My definition-

Work Diary- Studio back of heads

Evaluation

Today's session was based in the studio and the topic was back of heads. It sounded quite boring but once I had got into it, it started to get quite interesting in the different ways you could capture a simple concept. You could change the background colour, the angle and what part you photographed. I particularly liked how the images came out through the use of the flash which enhanced different elements.

This photograph is my favourite as I particularly like how bright the background is and how you can see the different shades within the light and also the shadow created.

This is my least favourite photograph of the session because although I like how the photo focuses on one part of the head, I don't like the dark background in the shot. I feel that the black background used and the black top makes the image quite dull.

Progression

I don't feel like I would want to explore back of heads in the studio any further because I think there is only so much you can do after a while. I feel that you become quite limited of different angles and backgrounds to create a new and unique shot.

Work Diary- Shape

Evaluation 

In today's session the topic was shape which sounded quite easy as shape could be anything as it is the outline of something. I thought it would be quite easy to find shapes so stayed in the college campus to take my photographs. Throughout the college the shapes were mainly circle and squares which were mostly drain covers. I found it difficult to find more abstract shapes like polygons.

This is my favourite photo which I took showing shape. I really like it because it is an abstract yet naturally occurring shape but I also like the contrast between the lightness of the leaf and the dull background.

This is another photo I took for shape, I like it because there is the presence of the shadow of the object. I also like it because the shape is quite bold and the darkness of the shadow helps to emphasise this.

Progression 

If given the opportunity to explore shale further I would use the opportunity to take photos of more natural and unsusal shapes like flowers and other natural objects. I would also consider filling the whole frame of the same object but focusing on only one perfect outline within it.

Work Diary- Studio Form

Evaluation

In today's session the topic was form which we had previously explored but instead of being in natural occurring locations it was to be done in the studio. It was the first session where we took photographs in the studio so there was a lot of new equipment which we had never used prior (studio lights and different cameras). 

The studio was a fantastic place to capture form as the shadows and difference in light was very obvious and easier to capture. Having taken a selection of photographs showing form it was then time to edit the shots. When editing the photos there wasn't very much which needed to be changed there was only minor changes in the exposure and light levels.

This photo is my least favourite shot of the session because I feel that the photo mainly focuses on the darker parts than the fewer lighter parts. I would defiantly reconsider taking this photo and redoing the editing of it to really capture the lighter parts.

In contrast, this is my favourite photograph as I feel that it is a very natural pose and it captures the difference in light rather well to create a good sense of form.

Progression

I would like to explore form in the studio further by maybe the use of objects rather than people. Given the opportunity I would look at the different forms that could be created - very light and very dark.
