This photo shows the face of an elderly man. The portrait shows the mans age through the wrinkles and the hair colour but the photo conveys a sense of wisdom because the mans full, clear eyes.

The above portrait is of a young child and is one of the most common forms of portraiture within a family. The child's face expresses innocence and youth.

This is a different approach to portraiture as it focuses on a persons back of head which creates a different perspective of things. The back of head is one of the parts you would not immediately associate with portraiture as many assume that it is the face.

This portrait very much creates a sense of form and contrast due to the great difference in the light through the composition. The part of the face you are drawn to the most is the eyes as they are both light and dark at the same time.

Although this photo is of the back of an individuals' head, there is much detail expressed throughout the photo through the texture of the hair but also the contrast through the skin and darkness of the top and the hair.

This portrait of a baby shows the child in its natural form in the sense that it is not a posed position. It creates quite a natural and innocent photo overall because of the baby's expression.

Mid Project Evaluation

Mid Project Evaluation
In the project so far, I think I am finding photography quite interesting and enjoyable. I have enjoyed some topics more than others. I like being able to look at different topics and seeing how the key elements are portrayed through photography in different ways.

My least favourite topics so far have been lines and depth because I found them a bit boring to get started with and especially with line I found it a bit limited after a while. However, I particularly enjoyed doing reflection and colour. I liked with reflection being able to capture things in a different way and I thought it was different to previous topics. I enjoyed colour because there are so many different colours and I generally enjoyed exploring them.

When it came to researching different photographers I first found it quite difficult to get inspiration but once I got started I found it easier. Having looked at different photographers and how they capture different things, I have some inspiration for my future work. I really enjoyed looking at David Maisel because he captures natural objects and scenes in very unique ways.

So far, I feel that I have learnt new skills, especially with Photoshop which I had no experience with. I am looking forward to the upcoming topics in photography and being able to capture different things in different ways.

David Maisel

I have chosen to look at the work of David Maisel because I think his work shows key elements in a different way to other photographers. I think his way of capturing photos are quite unique and the overall product of the image creates a quite powerful effect. Most of his work is landscapes but they are captured in such a unique way that they not look like a typical landscape.

I like this photo because I feel that within this landscape many key elements are demonstrated. I like how the bottom of the photo looks like a typical natural object but in contrast, the upper half is not very natural. The clouds are very dark and gloomy colours but to emphasise the contrast is a dry white and bright centre. I think the overall effect created is very strong and effective.

In this particular photograph, there is contrast between the bright colours of blues and oranges and the dark grey surroundings. Despite the photograph being of a natural scene and object, the way it has been presented looks nothing of the sort. I particular like the the colours which have been used to create an effective contrast throughout.

I love how these images are so unique but portray both colour and texture at the same time. The colours are rather bold and you would not imagine seeing these in a natural environment. The difference in light helps to emphasise the texture and especially to the left it emphasises movement.

This picture is quite simple and the colours used are also quite simple but the overall effect is quite powerful. The different shades of green show an explosion like effect through the smokey effect created. There is also great contrast between the green centre and the brown outer layer.

I feel that the work of David Maisel will influence my future work because the way how a simple concept is shown in quite a unique and unusual way. I think that I will take photos at different angles to see how the different angles effect presentation given by the image overall.

I feel that David Maisel's work has not really been shown in my work as much as I had first imagined. Originally looking at his work I thought that it would have influenced my work in trying to photograph things that have bold colours but you wouldn't expect them to have those colourings. I have found it easy to find bold and bright colours but have struggled to find objects with the bold colours which you would not associate with them. I feel the photo below of the shoes has captured the bold colourings but does not have the effect David Maisel's work does. On the other hand, I feel that this picture of the leaves shows a very bold colour for the natural object it is so I believe this is the best example of my work which shows influence from David Maisel.

I feel that the photo above does show some influence from the work of David Maisel. I feel that it relates to his work in a more realistic and possible way than his work does for the colours and textures he finds are not easily found. But I feel this picture shows several elements, like texture, colour, difference in light and reflection. I feel that these elements have been put together in a single photo to create an effective composition.

Overall I feel that I have struggled to photograph photos which show a strong influence of David Maisel's work. Having researched his work, I feel that it has taught me how elements such as colour and texture can be used together to make an effective overall photo. I have tried to incorporate these 2 elements and I feel that in some of the photos above I have used these elements to create a good photo. However, despite using several elements within my work I don't feel it creates the same bold effect as his work. I don't feel my work is directly representative of David Maisel but I feel that his work has taught me the importance of using several formal elements in a photo to make it effective. However, I do think that having studied the work of David, it has given me an insight of just how difficult and how much time and effort goes in to creating an unusual and unique photograph.

Work Diary- Photo join

Evaluation
In order to photo join, a quantity of photos of different sections of an object was needed to be taken. Having researched what photo join images looked like, it was imminent that buildings were quite popular but also quite a lot of photos were needed in order to create an effective one.
I started by taking pictures of a building but each photo must show a different section of the building, I then went on to take pictures of objects such as walls and bins- objects that could easily be photographed at a variety of different angles.
In order to create a photo join, there was a lot of editing needed to be done by photo shop.

 This photograph is my least favourite photo join because I found it rather difficult to connect the individual images together to make a larger image. I feel this was because the different angles the photos were taken at and then having to rotate a select few of the images to create a sense of form and depth.

This photo join is my favourite because I like how these individual images could join together quite effectively. In addition, I like how throughout the whole photo there is the presence of light differences which help portray form. However, I did find one particular part quite difficult and that was fitting together the rotated images.

Progression
I would like to do further work to progress in this topic by focusing on different buildings from different angles and a variety of distances. For example, flats and maybe even iconic within in London. I would try to emphasise the different angles and views the buildings have.

Work Diary- Texture

Evaluation
In todays session the topic was texture. After researching photography showing texture, I learnt that a lot of the photos were of close ups and had great contrast between the lightness and darkness. In order to capture texture, there must be light going across the photo to show the textures.
Firstly, I started by taking photos of natural objects such as leaves and tree trunks but after a while they were all the same but also some of these natural objects were difficult to capture the light and dark contrast. Then I decided to start photographing manmade objects like walls, wood and pavements which I felt really captured texture by the contrast of lightness.

The image above is one I edited to enhance the contrast to help emphasise the texture. It captured the texture of a painted wooden surface. I like how within the photo is the presence of shadow but I also like how the photo shows texture despite the use of quite bold colour.

This photograph is of a concrete surface, it shows quite a rough texture. I edited the exposure and contrast levels to make the different in lightness more obvious. I personally think that despite the colours are quite dull, texture is portrayed rather well.

Progression

Given the opportunity, I think I would like to explore texture further because it is similar to pattern but you have to capture the light and dark contrast to show the texture. I think that I would like to explore the textures of a variety of natural objects, for example sea shells and forestry.

This photograph shows a group of family playing a game with each other but there are many different pictures of the faces which portray a different emotion and expression on each.

The use of photo join shows the change in positions of an individual while carrying out a task. The arrangement shows a sense of movement.

This photo uses a range of photographs of different sizes and when put together they show the different emotions one is experiencing.

This photograph sis a photo joint picture of a person. Many pictures taken at different angles have been taken to be put together to create quite an abstract picture of an individual.

This building has been made up of photos from different angles and put together to create a sense of of form. 

In this photo, many pictures of a landscape have been put together to create one big image, although there is  gaps within the image it just adds to the fact that it is a photo joined image.

The difference in light has been used to emphasise the rough texture created by the surface of a star fish. It has used macro to shoot the image to emphasise the details.

Texture is shown in this image by the great contrast in the light and dark areas across the photo. The texture created is a quite sharp one.

A rough texture is created by these rocks by their surfaces but also the great contrast in light and darkness. 

This image shows texture throughout, mainly the texture is quite dry and rough. This is emphasised by the use of many objects but also the light.

A natural object, a tree trunk, is used to show quite a deep coarse texture which is emphasised by the deep ridges.

This close-up of a leaf surface is rather effective as it shows quite a rough but gentle texture. The close- up shows each individual line to emphasise the texture.

I feel that the photographs below, sourced from the internet, show shapes in different ways and show a variety of different shapes

This photograph shows a circular shape which is has then got triangular shapes being repeated throughout it. Within the circle, there is great contrast between the lighter and darker areas which I feel helps emphasise the  different use of shapes.

This photo shows a larger shape made of many little ones. The shape of the heart is made of little flowers which are also made up of shapes including circles.

This is a circle which has been made up of a metal bar. The fact that you can see the change in size of the bar creates a sense of distance.

This photograph uses everyday objects and positions them in such a way that a circle is created. The main shape is the circle, however, we can see that there are triangular shapes at the tips of the pencils.

A natural object had been photographed to show the shape of hearts. The fact that the background is blurred helps to exaggerate the shape.

Everyday objects have been photographed to show many circles. The difference in light helps to create a sense of form and depth as well.
