Definition- Tone

Tone-

 the lightness and darkness across a photograph. Dark tones show shadow and light tones show brightness.

The tone in this image is created by the very dark areas within the trees but then the very bright areas created from the streetlights.

This image shows tone of a natural image and the tone is the difference in lightness of the object. There are very dark areas and very light ones too.

Tone is shown by the contrast between the very dark background and very bright fence and sky. The contrast shows both light and dark tones.

This photo shows tone by the lightness of the trees to the left of the image and darkness on the right hand side of the image.

My definition-

 Tone is the variation in lightness and darkness across an image. The different use of tone can create mood and emotion, for example, dark tones can create mystery.

These images below show tone of different objects by the use of black and white colour effects.

This photograph is of a bee on a flower but is all in black and white. In this particular image the corners have been edited to make the flower the main focus point. The use of black and white helps to emphasise the different in lightness from the edge of the flower to the centre.

I particularly like this photo as I feel it shows tone very well. Although the picture is of half a flower, the fact it has water droplets on helps make the difference in tone much greater.

In this photo the difference in tone is mainly in between the ridges- darker within the ridges. The fact that the darker areas of the picture are the ridges helps to create a sense of depth.

Within this photo, the main focus is the lighter point at the end of the bridge. The great contrast in the lightness and darkness portrays and emphasises the tone well.

The tone in this image helps show where the light falls on the object- it is lighter on top and darker through to the bottom. The tone in this image helps portray a sense of form particularly because the object is spherical.

The tone is very different across this photo as there is the bright light making certain parts of the photo much lighter than the others and in contrast there are very dark areas of the image.

Photographer 2- Andrienne Adams

Andrienne Adams

The I have chosen to study the work of Andrienne Adams because I feel that it focuses on simple aspects of nature and captures them in unique ways showing patterns and textures that you typically wouldn't associate with that particular object. She focuses largely on aspects of nature which presents patter, colour and texture.

I like this picture takes a simple concept but captures it in a unique way. It manages to capture the rippling motion from the water but it also manages to show the reflections of the surroundings in a distorted manor. The photo shows colour, texture, reflection and form by the distribution of the light.

I really like the pattern and texture that is created in this image. I love the way how the black and white helps to emphasise these patterns. The photo shows tone, texture and pattern. The pattern in this image is both random and organised at the same time; it is random because the white pathway throughout but the black pieces of the pattern are very organised which make the image very striking. 

The above image, a close up of some leaves, shows precise patterns and a variety of colour. I like how the water droplets on several leaves has been captured which helps portray form. I also like how there is an assortment of colours which gives contrast between the like and dark. The key elements present in this photo are colour, pattern, texture and form.

 I like how the photo is so simple but it is very bold. The colours are quite bold and deep which draws in the viewer. I also like how there is texture and pattern captured throughout the image. This photo shows colour, texture, pattern and form.

I would like to include some of the techniques and focus points of Andrienne Adams' work because I love how the simplicity of the photos creates such a strong image. I would focus on the colours, patterns and textures present in natural objects such as leaves and flowers.

I feel that my photography has been rather influenced by Adrienne Adams' work for I believe I have focused on natural elements within my work. I have looked at flowers and leaves and other natural objects to convey different topics such as colour and pattern. This photo of the leaves, I feel this shows elements of her work because it is natural, focuses on shape, colour and texture to some extent. 

This photo above is quite different to photographs taken by Andrienne Adams for it is an example of multiple imagery. Despite this, I feel that this photo shows some key features and similarities to those used in Andrienne Adams work. Her work largely focuses on close ups of natural objects, their colours, texture and patterns. This photo above shows many close up shoots of the same plant. Each individual photo shows the texture and colour of the plant. Because of this I feel that my work has been influence by Adrienne Adams. 

 I feel that this particular photograph is quite representative of her work because it is quite similar to one of her own pieces. The whole frame is full of similar objects, which are leaves in this case, but there is one leave which stands out more than the others which in this case is the pink one in the centre. Overall, this photo shows predominately colour and texture. 

I think I would like to continue with the influence of Andrienne Adams' in my work because I think although they are simple objects, they do give a good overall effect. I want to try and focus more on the close up of objects to help portray texture and pattern even further. In addition, I think I would like to focus on one object in a frame regardless of the others also in it.

Photographer 1- Gisel Florez

Gisel Florez

I have chosen to look at the work of Gisel Florez because in previous research I was drawn to her photography. I feel that her work is very unique as I had never seen anything of that sort. I feel that her work emphasises motion and colour of thing we take for granted. The main focus of her work is explosions of fruit and colour explosions from handbags. In her work, mainly the background is black which helps to enhance to colours and motion created.

I like this photograph because the strength of the explosion, how you see the larger parts of the apple and the very small. In this photo the redness of the apple stands out a lot because of the use of the black background but also because the explosion is made of very pale greens and whites. I love the way how the force of the explosion is presented and how the motion has been captured. This photo relates to colour, tone, form and texture.

This photograph shows a pineapple exploding, I like the way how the top of the pineapple is at a different angle to the rest of the pineapple. I also like the contrast in the yellow and green of the pineapple because they are both very bold colours. This image represents colour, pattern, tone and form.

I like the photo in the sense how the pear is in the foreground and how the explosion is in the background. In this particular photo, the colour of the fruit is quite dull but the explosion is very bold. This photo is representative of form, colour and tone.

I really like this photo because its pure simplicity. It is very different to her usual work in the sense that it is a still life piece in contrast to her explosive work. The image shows a lot of the key elements very well; it shows texture very well as the fruit is close up. It also shows colour, tone, form and reflection.

Gisel Florez may influence my future work by how approach taking photos of key elements. In future, I would like to try and use a black background the help emphasise and highlight the colours and tone of an object. I definitely would like to explore still life photography and how I could make a simple object both striking and interesting.

Initially when I had looked at Gisel Florez's work I felt rather inspired because of the simplicity but the effect created. I wanted her work to be shown throughout mine but however it hasn't shown. The work she creates is amazing and to try and get shots like hers is rather difficult. I have focused on the simplicity of pictures to try and portray colour and tone but I don't feel it has the same effect created.

My photograph above is similar in aspects yet so different to that of Gisel Florez's. It is similar for colour and form have been influenced by her work and they have been captured in this particular photo. The reds and greens are quite bold colours which are used in this photo to demonstrate the formal element of colour. Throughout this photo shadows are created between the leaves and then also light is projected on the berries. I feel that the fact this photo uses a few formal elements which are similar to the 

I do not want to carry on trying to show the influence of Gisel Florez in my work because I feel that it is more difficult than I had first thought. However, despite not carrying on with her photography I have learnt just how difficult it can be to capture such photographs but has also taught me how simple photos do have a great impact.

The reflection in this image is very clear and the reflection is in a still, shiny surface.

 

Reflection in this photo is shown by the lights in the water. Although the lights are not shown in the picture their reflections in the water are created by the different colours and sizes.

 

This picture shows a distorted reflection which is created by the movement of the water the tree is being reflected in to.

 

This photo shows reflection by the reflection of the buildings in the glass panels of another building. The reflections are distorted to some extent because of the reflections being in the different panels.

 

My definition-

An image which is a replicate of an object in a surface of something like a puddle or a mirror.

These are pictures I have collected from the internet that I feel capture reflection in different ways.

This photo makes the reflection in the glasses the biggest focus point in the image. It is very powerful as the reflection is a very bold orange whilst the rest of the photo is in black and white.

The reflection in this particular photograph is made up of very bright light and silhouettes of a person and what looks like a hill. Because the reflection is in a black guitar, there is a certain level of colour present in the reflection- the blue sky and the yellow-orange light.

The reflection in this image is very clear, both the colours and the features. I like the way how there is only a certain part of the body's reflection. The angle the photo is taken at is also powerful as it helps create a sense of length.

The reflection in this photo is of a silhouette whilst the horses are actually moving at the same time. This makes the reflection partially distorted.

Although there is not the full image of the people, the reflection captures the body parts that are not shown. This picture is in black and white which emphasises the reflection.

I like this picture in the sense that there is nothing there to make a reflection but there is a full silhouette reflected in the puddle.

Work Diary- Reflection

Evaluation
Today I was tasked with taking photos of reflection. The first thing that came to mind was mirrors and windows. Instead of taking pictures around the college campus, I decided to venture out to the town centre where I felt there would be more objects which would portray reflections such as shop windows. 
Having collected a broad range of photos I then had to edit the best ones.
Below is my favourite one that I feel portrays reflection well. It is of a puddle and it shows a reflection of a persons silhouette. I particularly like how the shadow is very dark in comparison to the lightness of the puddle.

The photo below shows the reflection of the metal railing in the metal panels. As there are patterns throughout the panels, these reflect in the reflection of the railing to some extent. One element I am not so keen on is the fact that the photo is very much made up of the same colour or silver and grey.

Progression 
I would want to take further photos of reflection looking at mainly distorted reflections and silhouettes rather than a perfect reflection which is made by a standard everyday mirror.

Work Diary- Pattern

Evaluation
The topic of today's session was pattern. Having done some research about pattern in photography you could see the variety of different patterns coming from both natural and man made objects. Patterns can be random, organised, different colours and different shapes. When taking photos of patterns, I looked for natural patterns coming from trees and flowers and I also looked for patterns in man made objects like walls and drain covers.

Having collected quite a wide range of photos that portrayed pattern, the best ones were then edited. My favourite is of brick pathway. I like it because it shows a random yet organised pattern to some extent at the same time. I also like how the green between the bricks contributes to the pattern.

This photo is another I collected and it shows pattern from a natural object rather than manmade objects. The pattern is how each leaf is arrange on the stem but then each leaf has an individual pattern is. The colours are also similar throughout and although there is a main focus point of the centred leaves and stem, there is also other one present throughout the background.

Progression

I would want to progress further in this topic by focusing mainly on the patterns of everyday objects such as pathways and buildings, patterns we take for granted.

Work Diary- Colour

Evaluation
Colour. Colour is everywhere and taking pictures should be quite easily as a task. As given the task of taking pictures I went searching for images that would not be mistaken for representing anything else. I was searching for mainly bright colours such as yellows and greens but after a while some of the pictures started to feel quite repetitive. At the location I was taking photos was mainly full of flowers and natural objects; despite this I felt I had collected a variety of photographs demonstrating colour.

My favourite photo showing colour is the one below, quite simply a patch of grass. Throughout the grass there is a variety of shades of green which could not easily be mistaken for any other topic than colour. When it came to editing the photo I only really enhanced the vibrancy and saturation to give the colour more 'edge'. 

This is another photo I took to show colour. There is a lot of contrast between the bright yellow of the flowers and the dark green of the stems and leaves. I feel that because there are so many flowers in this image, that it is quite overpowering to some extent and because of this there has been a loss of detail for each flower.

Progression 

If given the opportunity to explore the topic of colour further I feel that I would like to. I would want to explore how the different colours represent the different moods. Also how the different colours of different objects vary for their purpose, for example underground signs are bold colours.
